Perambra Block: History and Heritage

Perambra Block, located in Kozhikode district, holds a unique place in the history and culture of North Malabar. Blessed with scenic landscapes where the foothills of the Western Ghats meet the plains, the region has a rich history of resistance movements and agricultural traditions.

Perambra is a land that provided strong support to the historic struggles led by the legendary Pazhassi Raja against the British East India Company. Since the region served as a strategic route to the Wayanad passes and forests, it also functioned as a shelter and military base for Pazhassi Raja’s fighters.

Renaissance and Social Progress

During the early twentieth century, Perambra was one of the important centres of the peasant movements that emerged in Malabar against the feudal system and the exploitation of tenant farmers. Libraries, reading rooms, and cultural organizations that emerged across the villages played a significant role in promoting literacy, social awareness, and political consciousness among the people.

Formation of Perambra Block Panchayat

Perambra Block was established in 1964 as part of India’s Community Development Block programme. With the enactment of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act in 1994, Perambra Block became an intermediate-level local government institution connecting the Gram Panchayats with the District Panchayat.

Covering an area of 275.02 square kilometres, the block comprises seven Gram Panchayats: Perambra, Chakkittappara, Changaroth, Cheruvannur, Kayanna, Koothali, and Nochad.

Cultural and Natural Features

Perambra is a fertile region where rubber, coconut, arecanut, pepper, and paddy are cultivated. Agricultural collectives and dairy cooperative movements form an important part of the rural economy of the region.

Established in 1975, C.K.G.M. Government College (CKGM Government College) has played a significant role in providing higher education opportunities to the people of the hilly and surrounding areas.
